How to Use the Amps to kW Calculator

This is the one calculator in the pair that actually needs power factor, and understanding why is more useful than the arithmetic itself. Its sibling, Amps to kVA, computes apparent power straight from voltage and current — full stop. This one goes a step further and asks how much of that apparent power is real, useful work:

Single-phase: kW = (V × I × PF) ÷ 1000
Three-phase:  kW = (√3 × V × I × PF) ÷ 1000

Same 230V and 10A as before, but multiply by a 0.8 power factor and single-phase real power comes to 1.84 kW — not the 2.3 kVA the same current and voltage produce without that third term. The gap between the two numbers, 0.46 kVA here, is reactive power: current that flows through the circuit and has to be supplied, but never converts into heat, light, or motion at the load.

A power factor of 1.0 would make this calculator redundant with Amps to kVA — real power and apparent power collapse to the same number when a load is purely resistive. Motors, transformers, and anything else with a coil almost never hit 1.0; 0.8 to 0.9 is typical, which is why utilities and electricians actually measure it rather than assuming it away. Get the power factor wrong here and the kW figure is wrong by the same margin — worth double-checking against a nameplate or a power meter reading rather than guessing.
