Where the 145 lb/ft³ Figure Comes From

It's a widely cited compacted density for standard hot-mix asphalt, though real mixes typically fall between 140 and 150 lb/ft³ depending on the aggregate blend. Ask your paving contractor for their mix's actual density if precision matters — a few pounds per cubic foot shifts the tonnage more than it seems across a large driveway.

Thickness Depends on What's Underneath

A residential driveway over a solid base commonly runs 2–3 inches of surface asphalt, while areas carrying regular vehicle traffic often call for more. This tool doesn't recommend a thickness — that's a decision for the paving contractor based on soil and load — it just converts whatever thickness you specify into tonnage.

Compaction Changes the Numbers

Loose asphalt takes up more volume than it does once a roller compacts it, which is exactly why the density figure here is a compacted value rather than a loose one. Ordering by loose volume instead of compacted weight is a common way installations end up short.
