A barrel is just a cylinder for the purposes of this formula — the classic wooden wine barrel's bulge doesn't factor in here, only straight-sided drums and tanks measure accurately this way. The standard oil barrel (42 US gallons) and the common steel drum (55 US gallons) are both specific real-world sizes that happen to fit this same cylindrical formula; check the manufacturer's dimensions rather than assuming a "barrel" always means one of those two capacities.
