How to Use the Board and Batten Siding Calculator
Wall width and height set the area. Board width, the gap left between boards, and batten width determine how many of each you need; waste percentage and price per linear foot turn that into an order and a cost.
Board-and-batten siding is wide boards run vertically with a small expansion gap between them, then a narrower batten nailed centered over each gap to seal it. The board count comes from how many board-plus-gap widths fit across the wall:
boards = ⌈wall width ÷ (board width + gap)⌉
battens = boards − 1One batten per interior seam is the baseline this calculator uses — it doesn't add extra battens for outside corners, since corner treatment (a batten, a corner board, or a mitered wrap) varies enough by project that guessing one would be more likely wrong than useful.
Linear footage for both boards and battens is just their count times wall height, waste percentage included. Keep the waste allowance close to 10% unless you're working around a lot of windows and doors, which eat into full-length boards and generate more scrap.
