How to Use the Cabinet Door Calculator

Choose Full Overlay or Inset first, since the two styles size doors in opposite directions. Enter the opening's width and height, pick one or two doors, and adjust the overlay, reveal, or gap figures to match your hardware.

Overlay and inset aren't just cosmetic choices — they change which direction the math runs. An overlay door has to be bigger than the hole it covers, because it needs to lap over the face frame on every edge; an inset door has to be smaller than the hole, because it sits down inside the frame with a small reveal gap all around.

Full Overlay

single door: width = opening width + 2 × overlay
pair of doors: each width = (opening width + 2 × overlay − gap) ÷ 2
height = opening height + 2 × overlay

A half-inch overlay is the common default for framed cabinetry with standard European-style hinges, though face-frame width and hinge choice both push that number around in practice.

Inset

single door: width = opening width − 2 × reveal
pair of doors: each width = (opening width − 2 × reveal − gap) ÷ 2
height = opening height − 2 × reveal

Inset doors need a tighter, more consistent reveal, usually 1/16 inch per side, because there's no overlay to hide an uneven gap the way there is with an overlay door. A door cut even slightly oversized on an inset job won't close at all.
