How to Use the CD Calculator

Deposit amount, yield, compounding frequency, and term are the four inputs — try a few different compounding frequencies on the same deposit to see how much that choice alone is worth.

A certificate of deposit locks money away for a fixed term in exchange for a rate that's typically guaranteed for the life of the term — no market risk, no daily rate changes, just compounding on a fixed schedule until maturity.

Maturity Value = P × (1 + r/n)ⁿᵗ

P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n how often it compounds per year, and t the term in years. Banks vary in how they compound CDs — daily, monthly, and quarterly are all common — so check your CD's disclosure for the actual compounding frequency rather than assuming annual.

Early withdrawal from a CD usually triggers a penalty that isn't modeled here at all; this calculator shows what the CD is worth if held to full maturity, which is the number worth comparing against other CDs when you're shopping rates.
