Presets are typical published mid-range figures for loose material — actual density varies with moisture and compaction. Use Custom to enter your supplier's exact figure.

Enter a volume in cubic yards and choose a material to calculate its weight in tons.

Weight and volume aren't the same thing for bulk material, and the gap between them is entirely down to density — how tightly packed a given material is.

How to Use the Cubic Yards to Tons Calculator

Enter a volume in cubic yards, then pick a material button — Mulch, Topsoil, Sand, Gravel, Crushed Stone — or hit Custom to type in an exact density from a supplier's spec sheet.

tons = cubic yards × density (tons per cubic yard)

The spread here is wide on purpose: a cubic yard of loose mulch weighs roughly 0.7 tons, while the same volume of crushed stone can run closer to 1.5, more than double. That's why this calculator refuses to hardcode a single "material density" — there isn't one. Delivery trucks are usually rated by weight, not volume, so a load that looks fine by the cubic yard can still overload a truck if the material is denser than assumed.
