Current spans an unusually wide range in daily life, wider than most electrical quantities. A phone charger draws under an amp; a household clothes dryer pulls 20–30 amps; a lightning bolt peaks at tens of kiloamps for a few dozen microseconds. A single unit — the amp — has to describe all of it, which is why the prefix scale matters here more than almost anywhere else in this category.

Microamps show up constantly in places most people never think about: a smoke detector's standby draw, a resting heart's bioelectric signal picked up by an ECG lead, the leakage current across a capacitor's dielectric. Milliamps cover most consumer electronics and LED circuits. Kiloamps are reserved for genuinely large events — short-circuit fault currents, arc welding, lightning — situations where an ordinary breaker's rating, measured in single- or double-digit amps, would barely register.
Mixing these up isn't a small mistake. Read a datasheet's "20 mA max" as "20 A max" and a circuit designed for LED-scale current gets fed a thousand times too much.
