Resistance is probably the most universally recognized electrical quantity outside a physics classroom, thanks largely to the resistor color-code chart hanging in every electronics hobbyist's memory — but the range it actually spans, from milliohms to megaohms, is bigger than the ohm-only mental model most people carry around.

Milliohms matter where resistance is supposed to be nearly zero and isn't quite — a length of copper wire, a battery's internal resistance, a closed relay contact. Kilohms and megaohms sit at the other end: a microcontroller pull-up resistor commonly runs 4.7 kΩ to 10 kΩ, while a multimeter measuring the resistance across dry skin might read several hundred kilohms to a few megohms.

Precision measurement is where the unit actually matters for accuracy, not just convenience. A milliohm-meter exists as a distinct instrument from a general-purpose multimeter specifically because most multimeters can't resolve resistance changes below roughly an ohm — measuring a 5 mΩ connector contact resistance needs different hardware entirely, not just a different number on the same display.
