Laminate, vinyl plank, and engineered wood are all sold by the box rather than by the square foot, and box coverage swings a lot between products — a bundle of wide-plank vinyl might cover 30 square feet while a box of narrow laminate strips covers barely 18.
Check the Box Before You Trust the Default
The 20 sq ft default here is a rough average, not a spec for any specific product. Manufacturers print the exact coverage on the packaging — swap that number in before ordering.

A simple square room laid straight can often get by on 10% waste. Diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, and rooms with a lot of closets or offsets all generate more cut-off scrap — raise the waste field toward 15% for those, higher still for anything with a lot of angles.
