How to Use the Framing Calculator

Wall length and on-center spacing (the 16"/24" buttons set the two standard values) drive the base stud count. Corners and openings each add their own stud allowance on top.

The field stud count comes from dividing the wall into equal on-center bays and adding one for the starting stud at the wall's origin — the same convention framers use when snapping layout marks on a bottom plate:

field studs = ⌈wall length (in) ÷ on-center spacing (in)⌉ + 1
plate footage = wall length × 3

Plate footage assumes a doubled top plate plus a single bottom plate, which is standard for load-bearing and most non-bearing walls in conventional framing — three times the wall length in linear feet of 2× stock.

Corners and Openings Aren't Free

Every corner needs extra studs to give the intersecting wall something to nail into and to back drywall on the inside corner — three studs per corner is a common builder's allowance, though some crews use two with clips instead. Every door or window opening needs king and jack studs on both sides to carry the header's load; four per opening is a reasonable average, but a wide opening or a load-bearing wall may need more. Both fields are editable because these aren't universal constants — they're framing conventions that vary by crew, wall type, and local code, so treat the total as a solid planning estimate rather than a final materials list.
