How to Use the GST Calculator

Switch between Add GST and Remove GST at the top of the tool, then fill in the price field that appears — Net Price for adding, Gross Price for removing — plus the GST Rate field, which starts at 10% but is yours to change.

Goods and Services Tax works exactly like value-added tax under a different name: a percentage charged at the point of sale (or built into the shelf price, depending on the country) and passed along through the supply chain until it lands on the end consumer. What varies enormously is the rate and how it's applied.

Canada charges a 5% federal GST, and several provinces stack a provincial sales tax or blended Harmonized Sales Tax on top of that — not modeled separately here, since this tool handles a single flat rate at a time. Australia runs a flat 10% GST. New Zealand's rate sits higher, at 15%. Singapore raised its GST to 9% in 2024, the last step of a phased increase announced years in advance. India is the outlier: instead of one number, GST there splits into slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — depending on what's being sold, genuinely more complicated than a single-rate calculator can fully capture.

Adding GST: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate)
Removing GST: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate)

Removing GST from a gross price is division, not a straight percentage subtraction — take 10% off a $110 gross price and you get $99, not the $100 net price the tax was actually calculated from. Divide by 1.10 instead and $100 falls out correctly.
