How to Use the Kilovolt-Amps (kVA) to Kilowatts (kW) Calculator

Apparent power in kVA, power factor as a decimal, multiply the two — that's the whole operation, and it updates as either field changes.

kW = kVA × PF

An 8 kVA UPS running at a 0.9 power factor delivers 7.2 kW of real, usable output. Drop the power factor to 0.6 for a poorly matched load and the same 8 kVA UPS only delivers 4.8 kW — the hardware's rated capacity hasn't moved, but the useful output it can actually supply has fallen by a third.

This is the same multiplication running under the shorter kVA to kW Calculator name; both pages exist because "kVA to kW" and "kilovolt-amps to kilowatts conversion" are two different phrasings of the identical lookup, and search doesn't always treat abbreviations and spelled-out names as interchangeable.

One quick sanity check worth keeping in mind: kW can never exceed kVA for the same load. If a spec sheet or a hand calculation ever shows a kW figure larger than its paired kVA rating, something's been transposed — the two values got swapped, or the power factor got applied to the wrong side of the equation.
