Running the Battery Math Backwards
This is the reverse of the more familiar Ah-to-kWh direction, useful whenever the energy target comes first and the amp-hour spec still needs figuring out — sizing a battery bank to a known kWh requirement, or checking whether a manufacturer's stated Ah number lines up with the kWh they also advertise.
Amp-Hours = (Energy (kWh) × 1,000) ÷ Voltage
A 5 kWh home battery built on a 48 V architecture needs about 104 Ah of capacity. Wire the identical 5 kWh of storage into a 12 V system instead and the requirement jumps to roughly 417 Ah — four times the amp-hours for a quarter of the voltage. That's not a quirk of this particular battery; it's the reason high-voltage battery banks get away with thinner, cheaper cabling for the same stored energy; a 12 V system pushing that much power has to carry four times the current through every wire and fuse.
