Free kWh to kW calculator: find the average power draw in kilowatts from an energy total and a duration.

Average Power
kW

Divide a kilowatt-hour total by the hours it took to use it to find the average kilowatt draw behind that number.

How to Use the Kilowatt-Hours to Kilowatts Calculator

Enter the total energy in kWh and the number of hours it took to use it. The average power draw over that period appears in kilowatts below.

What a Charging Session Actually Tells You

A home EV charging session is a good way to see this formula do something useful. A session report might show 22 kWh delivered over 7 hours of plugged-in time — divide one by the other and the average draw comes out to roughly 3.14 kW, even though the charger itself might be rated for 7.2 kW.

Average Power (kW) = Energy (kWh) ÷ Time (hours)

The gap between that 3.14 kW average and the charger's 7.2 kW rating isn't a malfunction — most EVs taper their charge rate as the battery fills, so the session runs at full rated power early on and drops off toward the end, and the average blends both phases into one number. Anyone using this result to size a circuit or estimate a bill should treat it as a period average, not the peak the equipment is actually capable of.
