How to Use the Kilowatts (kW) to Amps Calculator

Single-phase: I = (kW × 1000) ÷ (V × PF)
Three-phase:  I = (kW × 1000) ÷ (√3 × V × PF)

A 15 kW three-phase load on a 400V supply at a 0.88 power factor draws about 24.6A per conductor. Put the identical 15 kW on a 230V single-phase circuit instead, same power factor, and current jumps to roughly 74.1A — three times higher, since one conductor pair is now carrying what three conductors previously split between them. That gap is the practical reason large loads move to three-phase power the moment single-phase cable sizing starts looking impractical.

This is the reverse of the Amps to Kilowatts (kW) calculator, and the same warning applies in both directions: power factor isn't a rounding nicety here, it's load-bearing in the literal sense. Enter 1.0 instead of a motor's real power factor and the calculated current comes out lower than what the wiring will actually carry — exactly the kind of gap that leaves a breaker undersized against real-world load.
