How to Use the kWh to kW Calculator
Enter the total energy used in kWh and the number of hours over which it was used. The result is the average power that would have produced that total.
This runs the kW-to-kWh relationship in reverse:
Average Power (kW) = Energy (kWh) ÷ Time (hours)
The word "average" is doing real work in that output label, and it's worth sitting with. A device drawing a steady 2 kW for five hours uses 10 kWh — but so does a device that spikes to 10 kW for one hour and then sits idle for the other four. Feed either scenario's totals into this calculator and it reports the identical 2 kW average, even though the two draw profiles look nothing alike on an actual power meter. Averaging erases the shape of the curve; it only recovers the area underneath it.
That's a real limitation, not a defect — this calculator can't be the tool that answers "what's the peak load," only "given a total, what was the average rate." For appliance-level detail where the draw is closer to constant (a fridge, a server, a pump), the average is a decent proxy for the actual instantaneous power. For anything spiky — a compressor cycling on and off, an EV charger throttling — the average understates the peak by a wide margin.
