How to Use the Lumber Weight Calculator
Thickness, width, and length set the volume of one piece; quantity scales it to the whole order. Species density converts that volume to weight, and price per board foot converts it to cost.
Weight starts from board feet, the same volume unit the Board Foot Calculator uses, then multiplies by however dense the actual species is:
board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12
weight = board feet × density (lb per board ft)
Density is where this gets species-specific — kiln-dried Douglas fir runs around 2.8 lb per board foot, but a dense hardwood like white oak can run closer to 4, and a lightweight softwood like Eastern white pine can sit under 2. Green (undried) lumber weighs noticeably more than kiln-dried stock of the same species, too, since it's still carrying moisture. None of that is a fixed constant, which is why density is left as an editable field rather than baked into the formula — plug in the actual figure for your species if you have it, or check a lumber-yard reference table.
