How to Use the Metal Roofing Calculator
Pick gable or shed first, since that sets whether the roof has one sloped plane or two. Then enter the eave length, the horizontal run from eave to ridge, and the pitch; panel coverage width, waste, and price per square foot finish the order.
Pitch turns a horizontal run into the longer, sloped distance a panel actually has to span — steeper roofs need measurably longer (and more) material for the same footprint:
pitch multiplier = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)
slope length = run × pitch multiplier
roof area = eave length × slope length × number of slopes
A gable roof doubles that area for its two matching slopes; a shed roof only has one. Panel count divides the eave length by the panel's effective coverage width — not its raw sheet width, since adjacent panels overlap at the side lap and that overlap doesn't count as new coverage. 36 inches is a common effective width for exposed-fastener panels, but standing-seam and other profiles vary, so check the spec sheet for whatever's actually being ordered.
