Enter your AGI and common add-back items to calculate your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).
How to Use the Modified Adjusted Gross Income Calculator
Start with your Adjusted Gross Income — from a tax return, or from the Adjusted Gross Income Calculator elsewhere on this site — then fill in whichever add-back fields apply: IRA deduction claimed, student loan interest deduction claimed, foreign earned income exclusion, tax-exempt interest, and excluded foreign housing deduction. Any left at zero simply don't affect the result.
MAGI = AGI + IRA Deduction + Student Loan Deduction + Foreign Earned Income Exclusion + Tax-Exempt Interest + Foreign Housing Deduction
MAGI isn't one single fixed formula the way AGI is — different tax provisions define it with slightly different add-back lists depending on what MAGI is being used to determine, whether that's Roth IRA contribution eligibility, premium tax credit calculations, or the student loan interest deduction's own income phase-out. The five items above cover the add-backs that show up most consistently across those uses.
Tax-exempt interest is the one item on this list that never shows up in AGI in the first place — municipal bond interest, for instance, is excluded from gross income entirely, yet several MAGI definitions add it back specifically to prevent that exclusion from also lowering MAGI-based eligibility thresholds.
Total Add-Backs is shown separately from MAGI itself so it's easy to see exactly how much distance there is between your AGI and your MAGI — for most filers with no foreign income or tax-exempt interest, that gap is zero and the two figures match.
