How to Use the Money Weight Calculator

Switch between Bills and Coins mode, then enter a count — for bills, pick a denomination too — and total value plus weight in grams, kilograms, and pounds appear below.

Every US coin denomination is struck to an exact specified weight, and every Federal Reserve note is printed to the same weight regardless of what number is on it — a $100 bill weighs exactly the same as a $1 bill. That second fact is what makes bill weight math simple: multiply the bill count by roughly one gram and the denomination selected doesn't change the answer at all.

Bills: Total Weight = Number of Bills × ~1 g
Coins: Total Weight = Σ (count of each coin × that coin's official weight in grams)

Coins don't share that shortcut — a quarter (5.670 g) weighs more than twice as much as a dime (2.268 g), and a half-dollar (11.340 g) is heavier again, so coin weight has to be totaled denomination by denomination rather than assumed uniform.

Penny: 2.500 g Nickel: 5.000 g Dime: 2.268 g
Quarter: 5.670 g Half-Dollar: 11.340 g Dollar Coin: 8.100 g

These figures come from official U.S. Mint coin specifications and Bureau of Engraving and Printing note weight data — cited below the results — not estimates. A jar of loose change or a bank-strapped brick of bills can be weighed on an ordinary kitchen or postal scale and checked against this calculator's output as a rough coin-counting shortcut, though a bank's own counting equipment will always be more precise than weight-based estimation for anything that actually needs to reconcile to the cent.
