Multiplying fractions skips the part that makes addition annoying: no common denominator to find first. Multiply straight across, numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator:
a/b × c/d = (a × c) / (b × d)
2/3 × 3/4 is 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. No cross-multiplying, no matching denominators — just two multiplications and a reduction at the end.
That simplicity is exactly why multiplying fractions is often taught before adding them, despite whole-number addition normally coming first. Addition demands an extra setup step multiplication never needed, which makes "multiply straight across" the more forgiving place to start once fractions enter the picture.
A whole number slots in fine too, written as itself over 1 — 5 × 2/3 is really 5/1 × 2/3, which comes out to 10/3. Negative numerators follow the ordinary sign rule: a negative times a positive gives a negative result, and two negatives cancel out, carried straight through the multiplication rather than treated as a special case.
The result reduces automatically by dividing both numbers by their greatest common factor, so 6/12 never sits around unsimplified.
