Nursery tags and seed packets almost always recommend spacing as a single number — "space 12 in apart" — which implicitly describes a square grid, each plant claiming a spacing-by-spacing square of bed space. This Plant and Flower Calculator runs that same grid math in reverse, working from total bed area back to a plant count.

Tighter spacing fills a bed in faster and reads fuller sooner, but it also means more plants competing for the same water and nutrients as they mature — most tags give a spacing range rather than one fixed number for exactly this reason. A 10% waste allowance is a reasonable starting cushion for transplant losses and uneven bed edges; increase it for a bed with a lot of curves or an unusually shallow spacing where miscounts compound quickly.
