How to Use the Rent Calculator

Gross monthly income and a target percentage are the two fields — adjust the percentage away from the default 25% or 30% to see what a different budgeting rule would allow.

Landlords, lenders, and budgeting guides all reach for the same rough shorthand — rent shouldn't eat more than a set share of gross income — even though the exact share cited shifts depending on who's giving the advice and how expensive the local market is.

Affordable Rent = Monthly Income × Target %

25% and 30% are the two figures quoted most often; this calculator shows both alongside whatever custom percentage you enter, since neither number is a hard rule and plenty of renters in expensive cities budget well above 30% out of necessity rather than choice.

"Income" here means gross pay, before tax — the same convention landlords typically use when screening applicants against an income-to-rent ratio.
