How to Use the Roofing Calculator
Enter the building's horizontal footprint area — not the sloped roof surface — along with the roof pitch as a rise-per-12 number (a "6" means a 6:12 pitch). Waste percentage and price per square are both editable; set the price to whatever your supplier quotes, since material costs vary too widely by region for a single default to mean anything here.
A roof's footprint and its actual surface area are two different numbers, and the gap between them grows with pitch. Tilt a flat roof up at an angle and the surface stretches to cover the same footprint at a longer, sloped distance — exactly the relationship the Pythagorean theorem describes.
pitch multiplier = √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)
sloped roof area = footprint area × pitch multiplier
A 6:12 pitch works out to a multiplier around 1.118 — an 1,800 square-foot footprint becomes roughly 2,012 square feet of actual roof. Push the same footprint up to a steep 12:12 pitch and the multiplier jumps to about 1.414, over 2,545 square feet from that identical building outline. That's not a rounding quirk; it's why a steep roof always needs more shingles than a low-slope roof sitting over an identical footprint, even though both buildings look the same size from the street or on a set of blueprints.
Waste Percentage Covers More Than Mistakes
Ten percent is the starting point here, and it's not padding for error — it's the offcuts that come standard with any real roof. Every cut at a ridge, valley, hip, or edge produces a scrap piece that can't be reused elsewhere. A simple gable roof with two clean slopes needs less than 10%; a roof with several dormers and valleys can push well past it. Squares (the roofing trade's unit — 100 square feet of material) come out of that waste-adjusted area, and total cost is just squares times whatever price per square you enter.
