How to Use the Scientific Notation Calculator

The toggle decides which direction the conversion runs; get it backward and the input field expects the wrong shape of number, which is the most common mix-up with this one.

6,420,000 and 6.42 × 10⁶ are the same number. The second version just makes the scale obvious at a glance — stack it against 3.1 × 10⁹ and you can see it's about 500 times smaller almost instantly, which takes real work to spot from 6,420,000 versus 3,100,000,000 written out in full.

6,420,000 = 6.42 × 10⁶

This Scientific Notation Calculator converts either direction. Going to scientific notation, the exponent just counts how many places the decimal point moved to land the mantissa between 1 and 10 — six places left, in that example. Small numbers work the same way with a negative exponent: 0.0000042 becomes 4.2 × 10⁻⁶, since the point moved six places right this time. Switch to "From Scientific" and hand it a mantissa and exponent to get the plain number back.
