square feet = square inches ÷ 144

144 is exact, not rounded — it's 12², the same relationship that makes a square foot a foot on each side. Small parts and materials (glass panes, gasket stock, craft vinyl) are priced and cut by the square inch precisely because a square foot is too coarse a unit for anything smaller than a dinner plate.
