How to Use the Square Yards Calculator

Length and width in yards multiply into square yards — the unit carpet has been priced by in the US for decades, long after most other flooring moved to square feet.

square yards = length × width
square feet = square yards × 9

Nine is exact — a yard is three feet on a side, so a square yard is 3² = 9 square feet, no rounding involved. Carpet retailers still quote per-yard pricing out of habit more than necessity, which means converting a room's square footage back to yards (or the reverse) comes up constantly when comparing a carpet estimate against a flooring estimate priced in square feet.
