How to Use the VA to kW Calculator
Apparent power and power factor are the only two fields here, and neither has a default you need to accept — adjust power factor down toward 0 and watch how far the kW figure falls below the VA number, or push it to 1 to see them converge.
Here's the rule underneath every calculator in this power-conversion family, stated once, plainly: apparent power times power factor always equals real power, scaled to whatever unit pair you're working in. VA × PF gives watts. kVA × PF gives kW. This page just happens to cross both scales at once — starting from the smallest apparent-power unit and landing in the largest real-power one.
kW = (VA × PF) ÷ 1000
5,000 VA at a power factor of 0.8 comes out to 4 kW. Push the power factor toward 1.0 and the two numbers converge — at PF = 1, 5,000 VA is exactly 5 kW's worth of apparent capacity doing itself justice with nothing wasted. Drop it toward 0.5 and real power falls to 2.5 kW off that same 5,000 VA, meaning half the apparent capacity isn't doing useful work at all.
