Wood fencing gets built board by board on site; vinyl fencing arrives as finished panels that just get set between posts. That difference changes the whole estimating approach — instead of counting individual pickets, this calculator only needs to know how many whole panels a run breaks into.
Panels Don't Split

posts = panels + 1Because a panel is a fixed, pre-manufactured width, a fence length that doesn't divide evenly rounds up rather than leaving a gap — a 100-foot run with 6-foot panels needs 17 panels, covering 102 feet, not 100. Plan the layout with that rounding in mind, especially near a fixed endpoint like a house corner or an existing gate.
Gates Are Priced Separately
Gate hardware, frame reinforcement, and hinge posts all push a gate's cost well above a standard panel's, which is why this calculator tracks gate count and pricing as their own line item rather than folding them into the panel total.
All three prices default to zero — vinyl fencing costs vary by manufacturer, color, and privacy level far more than by region alone, so there's no reasonable global default to offer.
