squares = (net area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ 100A "square" is 100 square feet — the standard order unit for vinyl siding, carried over from the same convention roofing uses for shingles. The default waste allowance here runs a couple points higher than a typical roofing job, since vinyl installs generate extra scrap around J-channel, outside corner posts, and cutouts for spigots, vents, and light fixtures that a plain roof plane doesn't have to deal with. A simple rectangular wall with few penetrations can safely drop that number closer to 10%.
