How to Use the Volt-Amps to Kilowatts Calculator

Apparent power in VA and a power factor between 0 and 1 are the only inputs; multiply them and scale down by 1,000, and the real-power result tracks both fields live.

kW = (VA × PF) ÷ 1000

A 2,000 VA UPS load running at a 0.9 power factor is doing 1.8 kW of actual work — not the full 2 kW the VA rating alone would suggest. That 200 W gap is reactive power: current the UPS still has to supply and the wiring still has to carry, even though none of it ends up as light, heat, or motion at the load.

This is the smallest-to-largest jump in the real/apparent power family — VA is the smallest apparent unit on this site, kW the largest real-power one — but the underlying rule doesn't change with scale: real power never exceeds apparent power for the same load, so multiplying by a power factor at or below 1 can only hold the number steady or shrink it.

A power factor of 1.0 would make VA and kW numerically interchangeable (once the ×1000 is accounted for) — that's a purely resistive load, and it's the one case where checking this calculator against the Volt-Amps to Kilovolt-Amps calculator would show matching figures.
