How to Use the Wainscoting Layout Calculator

Wall width, wainscot height (measured to the cap rail — 36 inches is a common chair-rail height, but plenty of rooms run higher or lower), stile width, and a target panel width are the four inputs.

Two Elements, One Even Layout

Wainscoting alternates narrow vertical stiles with wider flat panels, with a stile at each wall edge and between every pair of panels — one more stile than there are panels. Solving for an even layout means finding a panel count first, the same way the Board and Batten Layout Calculator solves for battens:

panels ≈ (wall width − stile width) ÷ (stile width + target panel width)
stiles = panels + 1
actual panel width = (wall width − stiles × stile width) ÷ panels

The panel count rounds to a whole number and the actual panel width comes out however it needs to so the wall divides evenly — that's the number to cut to, not the target you typed in. Stile linear footage multiplies the stile count by wainscot height for a lumber estimate; cap rail footage is simply the wall width, since the rail runs the full length in one piece (or several joined pieces on a long wall).
