Points = (Calories ÷ 50) + (Fat ÷ 12) − (Fiber ÷ 5)
Fiber grams are capped at 4 before that last term runs, so a food with 10 grams of fiber gets treated the same as one with exactly 4 — the original system's own limit, not a rounding choice made here.
Each term reflects a different judgment about what a food "costs" beyond raw calories. Calories divided by 50 forms the baseline — more energy, more points, the most intuitive part. Fat gets penalized on top of that at roughly double the weight of protein or carbs, dividing by 12 rather than a larger number, because the original system specifically wanted to discourage high-fat foods beyond what their calorie count alone would suggest — reflecting late-1990s dietary guidance that treated fat as the primary driver of weight gain more than total calories did. Fiber subtracts points because high-fiber foods tend to be more filling per calorie than low-fiber ones — oatmeal and white bread can carry similar calorie counts but very different satiety, and the formula rewards the one that keeps people fuller longer.
WeightWatchers itself has moved through several point systems since 1997 — POINTS, PointsPlus, SmartPoints, PersonalPoints — each with a different underlying calculation, and none published in the detail the original one was.
